- What is a makerspace?
A makerspace is a collaborative place where people can share knowledge and tools to create. The possibilities are limitless—arts and crafts, electronics, 3D printing. The only limit is the ingenuity of our makerspace's members!
- Who can use the UTDesign Makerspace?
Any student, faculty, and alumni of The University of Texas at Dallas can access UTDesign Makerspace for free.
- How much does it cost to use the space?
The space is completely free to use for everyone who meets the above requirements.
- I am not affiliated with the university. Can I still join?
At this time, we are only open to students, faculty and alumni of The University of Texas at Dallas. We recommend you check out TheLab.ms in Richardson or The Dallas Makerspace in Carrollton.
- I have a specific question. Where can I ask it?
You can ask in the #general channel of our Discord server or you can ask an officer and they will do their best to answer your question.
- Where is the UTDesign Makerspace?
Our address is 3000 Waterview Parkway, Richardson, TX. We are located on the second floor of the Synergy Park North (SPN) building. If you enter from the main entrance, you can find us by going up the right-hand stairs and through the glass doors.

- When is UTDesign Makerspace open?
The doors to SPN and UTDesign Makerspace are unlocked from 7 AM to 9 PM Monday through Friday when the university is open. If you need access to the space outside of typical hours, please reach out to an officer.
- How much does it cost to use the 3D printers?
You must provide your own 1.75mm PLA, PLA+, or PLA Pro to print on our filament (FDM) printers or Inland standard resin for our resin (SLA) printers, but there is no service charge.
- Are there any UTDesign Makerspace employees?
No, we are entirely student-led. We have a faculty advisor and are overseen by the UTDesign department.
- What can I do to get more involved with the Makerspace?
You can read more about committees below and join a committee by filling out the committee application form.
- What is a committee?
Committees are designed to be a way for you to get some resume experience, get more involved with UTDesign Makerspace without having to commit the same time as an officer, and meet other like-minded individuals!
- What is the Community Committee?
The Community Committee is in charge of hosting events for interest groups (ex. keyboards, cosplay) and UTDesign Makerspace community.
- What is the Facilities Committee?
The Facilities Committee is in charge of training members on using certain technologies and providing maintenance to technology and the space as a whole. Members also clean the space and create signage to help members understand the space.
- What is the IT Committee?
The IT Committee is in charge of developing and maintaining connected systems such as our Discord bot, internet of things, OctoPrint instances, servers, smart locks, and more.
- What is the Marketing Committee?
The Marketing Committee is in charge of creating advertisements for UTDesign Makerspace events and promoting UTDesign Makerspace at PR events outside of the space.
- How can I join a committee?
You can join a committee by filling out the committee application form.
¶ Events and Student Organizations
- How do I reserve UTDesign Makerspace for an event for my student organiation?
Please fill out this form and we’ll be in contact. Contact the current President on Discord if urgency is required. Please do not reserve an area until you are sure that it will occur at the time given.
- How do I reserve UTDesign Makerspace for an event not affiliated with a student organization?
Contact the current Vice President on Discord to request an unofficial event.
- How does my student organization become a UTDesign Makerspace partner?
To be listed as a partner on our website, you must list us on your website or Discord server and hold at least one meeting per semester open to all UT Dallas students, staff, and faculty. We understand some organizations may not be able to have alumni at their events because of Student Organization Center restrictions, so this is not part of the requirement.

- How do I reserve a table or storage locker for my student organization?
In order to be eligible for a locker or table for your student organization, you must meet one of the following requirements:
• Your student organization has a specific topic (ex. aerospace).
• Your student organization works on specific on-going projects with storage needs (ex. robots).
At this time, we are not offering tables or lockers to student organizations who do not meet the above requirements (ex. social organizations). Contact the current President on Discord to request a table or storage locker.
