¶ Handling Injuries
The following information was written by a UTDesign Makerspace officer who is a certified EMT. However, you are responsible for your own safety and should refer to a medical professional as necessary.
As a reminder, being evaluated by UEMR and the Richardson paramedics is free of charge! It's better to be safe than sorry if there’s any doubt about your or someone else's health at all.
¶ Cuts, Scrapes, and Lacerations
¶ Minor
- Disinfect your hands using hand sanitizer or another disinfectant.
- If bleeding significantly, apply firm and direct pressure with a square of gauze for 5 minutes.
- Use an alcohol pad or disinfectant spray to clean the wound. Remove small debris if possible with tweezers.
- Bandage the injury. Replace the bandage when it becomes wet or dirty. If still bleeding, continue to apply direct pressure.
¶ Major (Laceration)
- If any of the below apply, call EMS immediately.
- Blood is bright red or spurting/pulsing
- Bleeding has not stopped after 5 to 10 minutes of direct pressure
- If yellow (fatty tissue) or white (bone) is visible
- If the cut is longer than an inch
- Use the Stop the Bleed kit across from the main entrance of UTDesign Makerspace near the elevator.
¶ Burns
¶ Minor
- Cool the burn under running water for 10 minutes.
- Apply a cool and wet cloth to facial burns.
- Remove burned clothing and any jewelry near the burn.
- Cover the burn with a sterile bandage or clean cloth.
- If blistering occurs, do not pop the blister.
- Take 25 mg of acetaminophen.
¶ Major
- If any of the below apply, call EMS immediately.
- Charred, blackened, or white skin of any size
- Burns covering greater than 10% of your body
- Significant burns on the face, eyes, ears, hands, feet, genetalia, perineum, or major joints
- Serious chemical or electrical burns
- Airway burns (wheezing, coughing soot, facial burns)
¶ Other
- If any of the below apply, call EMS immediately.
- Chest pain
- Shortness of breath
- Seizures
- Passing out
- Stroke symptoms (facial droop, unilateral weakness, sudden mental confusion)

¶ Emergency Exit
In the case of a fire or other emergency, please head to one of these exits to evacuate the building immediately and dial 911.
¶ Fire Extinguisher
In the case of a fire, dial 911 immediately. You can attempt to put it out using one of our many fire extinguishers, but don't put yourself at risk. If the fire grows too large to control, evacuate the building immediately.
¶ First Aid Kit
Our first aid kit contains pain relievers, bandages, and more. In the case of a health emergency, dial 911 and follow the operator's instructions. If you are suffering from respiratory issues, try to move away from 3D printers, laser cutters, soldering stations, or any other stations that may create fumes. If someone else is suffering from respiratory issues, turn off any stations nearby that could be emitting fumes.
¶ Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Safety goggles, safety glasses, and earplugs are available at our PPE stations. Make sure to use this when using dangerous tools that can harm the ears or eyes like the soldering station and laser cutter. Please return any non-consumable PPE once you are done using it.

If you need to dial 911 and do not have a phone on you, please use the provided emergency phone in the officer cubicle.
